Scholarship description

UQ's Academic Scholarship program aims to reward the achievements of outstanding school leavers and gap year students. If you are a high-achieving student and you are completing Year 12 in 2019 (or you completed in 2018 and you’re on a gap year), you are encouraged to apply. 

There are three scholarships on offer:

UQ Vice-Chancellors Scholarships

Awarded to applicants who achieve a minimum ATAR of 99.90 or equivalent:

  • Award Value: $12,000 per year, total value of up to $60,000
  • Duration:  Up to 5 years
  • Level: Undergraduate and any subsequent related postgraduate study, such as Honours.

UQ Excellence Scholarships

OP 1 (or equivalent) applicants who have demonstrated outstanding academic, leadership and/or significant community service achievements during Years 11 and 12:

  • Award Value: $6,000 per year, total value of up to $24,000
  • Duration: Up to 4 years
  • Level: Undergraduate and any subsequent related postgraduate study, such as Honours.

UQ Merit Scholarships

High achieving applicants (OP 1-3) who have demonstrated significant academic, leadership and/or community service achievements during Years 11 & 12:

  • Award Value:  $6,000
  • Duration:  First year of study
  • Level: Undergraduate study.

Eligibility

Academic scholarships are open to Year 12 and gap year students who are:

  • Australian Citizens or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holders, or
  • Australian Permanent Residents, New Zealand citizens, or international students completing, or have completed, Years 11 and 12 in Australia;

AND

  • have not completed any previous tertiary study other than that undertaken as part of Year 11–12 studies (e.g. Enhanced Studies Program); and
  • have applied for a tertiary place through QTAC; and
  • are intending to enrol as a full-time student in a UQ undergraduate program in 2020 (or 2021 if they are deferring their tertiary place); and
  • will have UQ listed as their 1st or 2nd QTAC preference.

How to apply

Step 1: Online Eligibility and Application Form

Applicants only need to complete and submit ONE application to be considered for the three Academic Scholarships on offer.

Before you apply, you will need to apply to QTAC to receive your reference number. Your QTAC number is the reference number which you receive after you have lodged your QTAC application online. Your QTAC number will begin with a '20' (or a '19' if you are a gap year student who applied through QTAC in 2019). (Note: your QTAC reference number is different to your LUI number or QTAC receipt number)

  • Go to the Application link and create a user profile.

Note:

-Do not use your secondary school email address;

-Use the same personal details as your QTAC application; 

-If you applied for Enhanced Studies Program in the previous year at UQ, you may already have a user profile to use.

  • On your Profile page, choose Programs and select Academic Scholarships.
  • To commence your application, complete the Eligibility form to ensure you are eligible to apply for a UQ Academic Scholarship.
  • If you are eligible to apply, the Application form can then be commenced. You can ‘Save’ the form and return to it as many times as you please.

Do not ‘Submit’ your application unless you are sure you have nothing further to add to it. 

  • Please answer all the questions on page 1 of the Application Form.

Please ensure you use the same details as you have used in your QTAC application in the personal and contact details sections.

  • You can indicate up to 10 of your best achievements, achieved in years 11 & 12, in the academic, leadership and community service sections on pages 2-4.  A drop down list of example achievements in each section can be selected, otherwise select ‘Other’ and use the free form text box to add your achievement.

Please note, you will be required to provide supporting documentation to evidence ALL your listed achievements.

  • Check the boxes applicable to you on page 5.
  • Check the box on page 6 after you have read the Privacy Policy and Applicant Declaration.
  • Upload supporting documentation in the Upload Documents sections relevant to your listed achievements. (Refer section 2 below)
  • When you are ready to finalise your application, having completed the application form and uploaded supporting documentation, click the ‘SUBMIT’ link. 

Please note, the application form cannot be edited once it has been Submitted.

  • The Online Application Form and all supporting documentation for 2020 Academic Scholarships must be submitted by midnight on the closing date.  Late applications will NOT be considered.
  • Once your application has been submitted you will receive an email as part of your application process to confirm that your Online Application Form has been successfully submitted. Please contact the Student Fees and Scholarships Office at ugscholarships@uq.edu.au if you haven’t received your confirmation email within two working days of submitting your application.

Step 2: Supporting Documentation/Evidence

Once you have completed the online application form, you will be required to upload documentation to support the academic, leadership and community service achievements that you listed in those sections on your application form. All documentation must be uploaded before your application is considered complete - you must upload documentation prior to Submitting your application as documentation cannot be added once you have submitted.

Applications without supporting documentation will not be considered. Hard copies of documents are not required at this stage of the process, however verification of documents (originals) may be requested at any future stage. 


Privacy
The University of Queensland complies with Australian and Queensland privacy laws and guidelines. The University of Queensland treats information collected by it as confidential. Information supplied by you will only be used for the purpose of assessing your eligibility for a scholarship and the scholarship selection process.

The University of Queensland will not make available to a third party any personal information supplied by you unless required or permitted by law or  where you have consented to the disclosure. The University may distribute aggregated statistical information for statutory reporting purposes but only in a form that will not identify any person individually. Selection criteria

  • Scholarship recipients will be determined by a panel of senior UQ staff and selection is completely at the University’s discretion.
  • Scholarships will be awarded with consideration to a range of factors including but not necessarily limited to academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and/or community service achievements, financial need, program preferences and secondary school attended.
  • Bonus ranks applied as a result of any scheme will NOT apply for the purposes of awarding scholarships.
