About this scholarship

Established in 1996 by a bequest to the University of $26,000 under the Will of Joseph Sleight to support research in some branch of psychological medicine.

This Scholarship is a Philanthropic Higher Degree by Research, Grant.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to Higher Degree by Research or Post Graduate Students conducting research in the area of psychological medicine while undertaking the research dissertation in their study program. 

Student must be enroled in the Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Psychology, Master of Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychology (formerly Doctor of Psychology), or PhD programs.

The research must examine a topic that seeks to further understand the psychological processes relevant to the development, prevention or treatment of a medical condition. For the purpose of application, mental health is considered a medical condition. The Bursary must be spent on equipment, maintenance items or data entry related to the program.

How to apply

A completed Joseph Sleight Bursary Application Form and Academic CV must be submitted to the HLO via email hdr.psychology@enquire.uq.edu.au no later than 12 May, 2024.

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted

Selection criteria

Applicants will be ranked on the basis of:

  • academic achievement and potential for scholastic success; and
  • the significance and relevance of the proposed use of the scholarship to the applicant’s Higher Degree by Research candidature; and
  • any other matters the selection committee sees fit.

Selection of a scholar will be made by the Dean of the Graduate School on the recommendation of a committee comprised of:

  • the Head of Psychology or their delegate.
  • 2 members of staff from the School of Psychology.

Rules

This is a Philanthropic HDR scholarship and adheres to the terms and conditions outlined in the Schedule A Postgraduate Research Scholarships

All philanthropic scholarship recipients must adhere to the conditions of UQ research and travel scholarships

Holders of these philanthropic scholarships must acknowledge them in any paper that is published as a result of the research conducted while the recipient held the scholarship.

Donors may also invite the recipient to present or report on the work conducted as part of the scholarship, in which case they must comply or risk losing the scholarship.
