About this scholarship

Madonna Pearl Staunton OAM (1938–2019) was an artist and poet born in Murwillumbah who lived in Brisbane.

Staunton was encouraged to make art by her mother, who was also a painter and poet of repute. Her father was a book trader, and she grew up in his store surrounded by literature. Her own studies of music and oriental philosophy, and her immersion in writing, particularly poetry, broadened her creative development. Staunton is recognised for her contributions to Australian Modernism over five decades.  Staunton herself described her art as ‘an environment poetical, ironic, wistful … the interplay and relationship of associated objects; the dislocation of association, suggestion, memory and whim’.

The purpose of this bequest is to encourage and contribute to the research and study of Poetry.

The minimum value of the grant is $6,000.
