About this scholarship
Project 89 is a Vietnamese Government initiative that builds capacity and academic expertise among Vietnamese university lecturers and senior leaders. The Australian Government supports the delivery of this initiative.
UQ will provide:
- a tuition fee discount to cover the gap between the tuition fee scholarship funded by the Vietnamese Government (Project 89) and the full UQ tuition fee
- a supplementary living allowance, in addition to the Project 89 stipend, to bring the total stipend up to UQ's minimum base stipend rate for that year (for example, the 2026 rate is AUD $37,500 per year) while candidates are in Australia.
Eligibility
This scholarship is open to prospective PhD candidates who meet UQ's PhD entry requirements.
You will be eligible for this scholarship if you:
- are a citizen of Vietnam
- satisfy the selection criteria set by Vietnam government scholarship (Project 89)
- satisfy UQ’s admissions entry requirement and be offered a place in the PhD program; and
- meet the University’s English proficiency requirement.
How to apply
Current PhD candidates can use their original offer of admission when applying and must apply through the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in Vietnam.
Step 1: Apply to UQ for PhD admission.
- Before you can apply for the Project 89 PhD Scholarship, you must first receive an offer of admission to a PhD program at The University of Queensland. Follow UQ's PhD how to apply process.
- In your application, clearly state that you are applying for a Project 89 Scholarship.
Step 2: Apply to Project 89 for the scholarship.
- If UQ issues you with a provisional offer letter, you must then submit a separate application and supporting documents to Project 89 directly via the Ministry of Education and Training in Vietnam (MoET) by their specified deadlines.
Step 3: Notify UQ if you're accepted by Project 89.
- If you secure scholarship funding from the Project 89, you will need to provide your Project 89 scholarship letter to UQ. A UQ unconditional offer letter can then be issued to you, provided you have met all of UQ’s outstanding admissions entry requirements.
- You will be required to commence in the research quarter specified in your UQ offer letter.
