About this scholarship
Established in 2024 and maintained by generous donations from the UQ alumni, business and scientific community, the Molecular Maverick Award celebrates individuals who break free from traditional boundaries, showcasing exceptional skills that position them as leaders and innovators in academia and industry.
Eligibility
An applicant is eligible for the award if the applicant:
- submits an application to the Faculty of Science by the closing date for applications
- is a domestic or international student in accordance with The University’s Fee Policy
- is enrolled full-time in an HDR approved program in a discipline with research links to chemistry and/or molecular biosciences
- has completed 2 years of their PhD or one year of their MPhil (or equivalent) at the discretion of the Head of School
- has demonstrated the ability and/or potential to become a leader and innovator in science and industry
- participates in the Molecular Maverick [SCMB] pitching event.
How to apply
You'll need:
- a personal statement included with the application outlining why you are the best fit for the award per the criteria and how you will use the award to create change
- an outline of your research focus, innovation and potential for industry translation
- supporting document/s that demonstrate creative thinking, entrepreneurial and leadership qualities
- to indicate your availability to participate in the SCMB pitching event.

Selection criteria
Eligible applicants are assessed on the following criteria:
- research focus, innovation and potential for industry translation
- strength of personal statement included with application outlining why the individual is a Molecular Maverick per the criteria and how they will use the award to create change
- demonstrated creative-thinking, entrepreneurial and leadership qualities
- presentation at the SCMB pitch event as determined by the judging panel
- other evidence deemed relevant to the applicant’s future success as a Molecular Maverick.
What happens next
We’ll send you an email to confirm we’ve received your application.
The selection committee will review and shortlist applicants for the SCMB pitch event.
We'll invite shortlisted applicants to deliver a pitch at the SCMB pitch event in order to be considered for the award. If you are shortlisted, you will receive an invitation after the closing date of the application to the event.
