About this scholarship
Established by donations from Marie and Alf Berry in memory of their granddaughter Helen Kay, a postgraduate research student who died in 1999 while completing her degree, the scholarship commemorates the work of a promising young scholar of Australian literature, life writing and the environment.
Eligibility
The Scholarship is open to Higher Degree by Research candidates conducting research in the School of Communication and Arts and who are nearing the completion of their studies.

Selection criteria
Your applicantion will be ranked on the basis of:
- academic achievement and potential for scholastic success;
- how the scholarship will be used in furthering the applicant's research and professional development; and
- how the fund will provide financial assistance to support the submission of their thesis within 3 months.
Rules
- This philanthropic HDR scholarship adheres to the terms and conditions outlined in the Schedule A Postgraduate Research Scholarships.
- All philanthropic scholarship recipients must follow the conditions of UQ research and travel scholarships, including reporting and progress requirements.
- Donors may invite the recipient to present on the work conducted as part of the scholarship, in which case they must comply or risk losing the scholarship.
- Holders of these philanthropic scholarships must acknowledge them in any paper that is published as a result of the research conducted while the recipient held the scholarship.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered; applicants are responsible for providing the required documentation and the Graduate Research School will not follow up with individuals.
