Established in 2009 in memory of the late Dr H. George Osborne AM, Dean of Veterinary Science at UQ from 1971 to 1972, and is maintained by an annual donation by his family. This is a philanthropic Higher Degree by Research grant scholarship.


The scholarship is open to domestic PhD students engaged in beef cattle or sheep research, including production, reproduction or medicine research in the School of Veterinary Science.

How to apply

To apply, complete the application form (all sections, including signatures) and attach the following supporting documentation:

  • cover letter outlining your reason for applying for this scholarship and addressing the scholarship selection criteria
  • academic curriculum vitae
  • a letter of support from your principal advisor.

Email completed submissions to by 5pm Wednesday, 8 January 2020. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.

The selection committee may decide to interview short-listed applicants, and their determination will be considered final; no further communication will be entered into. All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application. 

Selection criteria

Selection of a scholar will be made by the Head of Veterinary Science and must be endorsed by the Associate Dean (Academic) before being sent for approval by the Dean of the Graduate School.

Applicants will be ranked on the basis of:

  • academic achievement and potential for scholastic success;
  • any other matters the Head of Veterinary Science sees fit.

Terms and conditions

All philanthropic scholarship recipients must adhere to the conditions of the UQ Research and Travel Scholarships Policy, including reporting and progress requirements.

If you are awarded this scholarship, you must acknowledge it in any paper that is published as a result of the research conducted while you held the scholarship.

Donors may also invite the recipient to present on the work conducted as part of the scholarship, in which case they must comply or risk losing the scholarship.
