Description
The scholarship is awarded, as tenure becomes vacant, to a student who completed Year 12 at a secondary school in north Queensland and can demonstrate that they provided service to their local community during that time.
The scholarship was established in 2009 and is maintained by the income from a bequest from the late Salvatore Vitale.
Eligibility
The scholarship is open to students who:
- in the year immediately before, completed year 12 at a secondary school in north Queensland,
- are enrolled full-time in first year courses for an undergraduate program at The University of Queensland, and
- can demonstrate that they provided service to their local community while attending senior secondary school.

Selection criteria
The scholarship is awarded as tenure becomes vacant to the applicant showing greatest merit based on:
- academic achievement in secondary school,
- the service that the applicant has given to their local community during senior secondary school, and
- any other matter that the Academic Registrar considers to be relevant to the applicant's future professional success.

Terms and conditions
The recipient of a scholarship holds the scholarship for the minimum completion time of the program in which they were enrolled at the time of award, subject to:
- continuing to be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at UQ, and
- passing all courses in each semester of study that the recipient undertakes.
Terminology
'North Queensland' means:
- the city of Townsville, Queensland, or
- any town or city that lies north of Townsville and is within the state of Queensland.
