The purpose of the scholarship is to support honours students studying in the field of immunology at the Diamantina Institute.

The scholarship was established in 2013 and is maintained by income from the Otto Hirschfeld Memorial Fund. This fund was established by Mrs Joan Hirschfeld in memory of her husband, Dr Otto Hirschfeld, Chancellor of the University from 1953 to 1957, and is supported by members of the Hirschfeld family.


  • You must have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Applications are open to those who commenced their honours program mid-year 2020 or the beginning of 2021
  • You must have been enrolled in an honours program through any enrolling School or Faculty at The University of Queensland on 1st March 2021.
  • You have an academic primarily based at UQDI supporting your application as your Principal Supervisor
  • The majority of the project must be undertaken at UQDI


  • Recipients must maintain full-time enrolment.


  • This scholarship cannot be deferred.

  1. To apply, please email to the following documents:
    • Cover letter highlighting previous research experience and interests and stating career aims and ambitions. Please also specify you would like to be considered for the Otto and Joan Hirschfeld Memorial Honours Scholarship in Immunology.
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • A supporting statement from the project Supervisor
    • Certified copy of Academic Transcript (UQ students may attach a pdf of their studies report, which will be verified by UQDI); original documents will not be returned.
  2. All applications must be received by UQDI Administration before the closing date fully completed (5pm, Monday 12th April 2021).  Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection criteria

For the selection process, the Director must establish a selection committee comprising:

  • the Director, or nominee, as chair of the committee; and
  • one representative of UQDI Education committee; and
  • at least one member of the university's academic/research staff currently undertaking researching in immunology.

The Scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit as demonstrated by:

  • academic excellence in their studies to date; and
  • an interest in pursuing a career in medical research and immunology; and
  • financial need; and
  •  any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant's future success in the field of immunology.

The selection committee may decide to interview short-listed applicants.

Terms and conditions

The recipient may hold the scholarship for one year, subject to the recipient continuing to be enrolled full-time at UQ in an approved program in the relevant field.
