Scholarship description

Established in 2016 by the annual donation from Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) in honour of the late Mort Johnson. The purpose of this scholarship is to support students with a strong interest and potential involvement with the Australian Banana industry in their third or fourth (honours) year of studies at the University of Queensland.

Eligibility

An applicant is eligible for the scholarship, if the applicant: 

  1. submits an application to the Head, by the closing date for applications; and
  2. is enrolled full-time and has either completed at least 32 units of the relevant program; or has commenced enrolment in honours year in the relevant program; and
  3. is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident; and
  4. holds a class C drivers licence; and
  5. does not hold another scholarship that the Head considers to be similar.

How to apply

Please complete all sections of the application form including signatures and ensure that supporting documentation is attached. Completed submissions are to be emailed to safs@enquire.uq.edu.au by 5:00pm {AEST)  10th August, 2019. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.

Selection criteria

The scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit as demonstrated by:

  • academic achievement in courses undertaken during the first four semesters of the relevant program; and
  • personal qualities, including leadership potential; and
  • strength of interest that the applicant demonstrates in completing at least one period of vacation employment at a banana business in North Queensland; and
  • who have demonstrated an interest and the capacity to make a
  • worthwhile contribution to the development of the Australian banana industry
  • any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant's future success in environmental science profession.

The selection committee may decide to interview short-listed applicants, and a higher preference is given to section 4(2:b-d).
