Scholarship description

The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and support students to undertake research into the field of geriatric medicine, in particular Alzheimer’s disease, as part of their requirements for a:

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery/ Master of Philosophy
  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery/ Doctor of Philosophy
  • Doctor of Medicine/ Master of Philosophy
  • Doctor of Medicine/ Doctor of Philosophy.

The A. and J. Gratcheff Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 and maintained by the income from a gift of $48,000 from Mrs Valentine Finner in memory of her parents.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to students who:

  • submit an application to the Dean, by the closing date for applications; and
  • is either intermitting or has concurrent enrolment in the program to undertake a research project as part of the requirement of -
  • concurrent MBBS/MD-MPhil; or
  • intercalated MBBS/MD-MPhil or MBBS/MD-PhD; and
  • is undertaking research into the field of clinical geriatric medicine with preference given to students researching Alzheimer’s disease; and
  • does not hold another scholarship that the Dean considers to be similar.

Selection criteria

The scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit as demonstrated by:

  • academic achievement in the MBBS/MD; and
  • feasibility of the proposed project and the tangible benefits that may be expected to accrue from the project; and
  • any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the  applicant's future success in the profession of medicine.

Terms and conditions

The recipient may hold the scholarship for one year, subject to the recipient continuing to be enrolled in a relevant program. The scholarship may not be deferred.
