To mark the 2019 closure of the Alumni Friends Dentistry Special Interest Group, the caretaker committee (Dr Chris Muir, Dr Marcus Tod and Dr John O’Hare) with the support of Dr Stephen Papas, spearheaded a program of fund-raising in order to establish an endowment fund to support Research for the Provision of Oral Health care for those suffering long-term hardships.

The scholarship will support a Higher Degree by Research student who is undertaking research which will benefit oral health in disadvantaged communities.

This is a Philanthropic Higher Degree by Research, Top up Scholarship.


The scholarship is open to International and Domestic candidates who are successful in receiving a base stipend scholarship to undertake a Higher Degree by Research focused in the area of oral health in disadvantaged communities.

All philanthropic scholarship recipients must adhere to the conditions of UQ research and travel scholarships, including reporting and progress requirements.

Holders of these philanthropic scholarships must acknowledge them in any paper that is published as a result of the research conducted while the recipient held the scholarship.

Donors may also invite the recipient to present on the work conducted as part of the scholarship, in which case they must comply or risk losing the scholarship.

The scholarship may be held for the maximum duration stipulated in the 4.80.01 UQ Research Scholarships Policy, with approval by the UQ Graduate School Dean and on compliance with all conditions stated therein.
