Description
Gram-negative organisms are a significant cause of healthcare-associated infections. There is only limited understanding of the clinical and molecular epidemiology of these infections in Australian children.
The overall aim of this project is to explore the molecular determinants of virulence and antimicrobial resistance in invasive Gram-negative infections in children and neonates. The student will apply whole genome sequencing techniques in order to understand the transmission dynamics of both susceptible and resistant invasive Gram-negative organisms in children. The project capitalises on a national surveillance study of invasive infections in children and involves collaboration between pathogen genomics, molecular biology and clinical paediatrics.

A background in pathogen genomics, bioinformatics, or molecular biology would be preferable.
