The CTA supports development activities and associated travel costs for UQ HDR Students travelling to one of the overseas partner institutions listed below. Travel to other institutions is not supported by this award. Institutions include:


North America

  • Emory University, USA
  • Washington University in St. Louis, USA
  • University of British Columbia, Canada

South America


  • Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
  • Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), China
  • Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Indonesia
  • Universitas Indonesia

Up to $10,000 is available, with justification. The amount awarded will be considered against the period of exchange and expenses outlined. 


In order to be eligible for a CTA, you must:

  • be travelling to one of the listed institutions - other institutions will not be considered.
  • be a confirmed UQ HDR candidate at the time of application.
  • be enrolled full-time at UQ (part-time students are eligible to apply but must change their enrolment to full time while overseas).
  • not have an overdue milestone at the time of application.

Selection criteria

Students will be selected on:

  • The appropriateness of travel and the ability to contribute to stronger partnerships between UQ and its specified partner. 
  • academic merit

Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one of the Career Development Framework sessions below: 

  • Career Control for Researchers 
  • a Networking workshop (e.g., Strategic Networking, Networking breakfasts)
  • a Career Strategy workshop (either Career Strategy: General or Career Strategy: Plan for the Future)
  • Communicating in a Global Environment

If you are a remote student, or enrolled at the Gatton Campus, the Working in Teams edX course would be considered a suitable substitute. You will need a verified certificate as evidence, the cost of which can be negotiated with the UQ Graduate School by emailing

Terms and conditions

Read the following terms and conditions carefully. 

  • Any changes to the purpose, or dates of travel requires prior approval from the Graduate School. Failure to obtain the approval may forfeit the award.  Retrospective changes will not be approved. No changes to destination will be approved. 
  • Departure must be no earlier than one week after the outcome of the round is announced, as retroactive funding will not be approved.
  • Applicants must seek approval for the proposed activities and travel from their Principal Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Applicants are responsible for arranging appropriate UQ travel insurance.
  • Any unspent funds must be returned to the Graduate School.
  • Successful applicants must submit a report, and a reconciled budget with scanned copies of airfare and accommodation receipts to the Graduate School within one month of their return.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that additional funds are available to supplement the award, if required.

Incomplete applications will not be considered; applicants are responsible for providing the required documentation and the Graduate School will not follow up with individuals.
