Scholarship description

This PhD project on aggregation in bauxite residue is part of a large multi-million dollar research programme being undertaken by Emirates Global Aluminium on new productive uses for bauxite residue. Production of manufactured soil products is one such use and this project focusses on the physical properties of such products in relation to their chemical and microbial properties. The project will focus on the nature of natural binding agents in residue and the strength and stability of aggregation. The influence of time and temperature, tillage and root growth through and around aggregates (and associated aggregation) will be investigated. The project will relate physical properties of aggregates to chemical and biological properties of the manufactured products.

The successful applicant will interact closely with staff working on the research area at St Lucia and with project managers in UAE.

Selection criteria

Applicants will have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent. Basic expertise and experience is required in one or more of the following areas: soil science, environmental science, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering or related discipline.

An interest in rehabilitation/revegetation of mine spoils, soil science or environmental science is highly desirable as well as hands-on operational experience.

The successful applicant will be highly competent in the laboratory and capable of working independently within a team.

Strong academic performance demonstrated through publication output in peer reviewed journals is highly desirable.
