About this scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2025 supported from funds held upon trust, from the Will of the late Honorary Professor Gideon Chitombo. Professor Chitombo, began his journey at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in 1982, leading to a four-decade-long relationship culminating in his 2009 appointment as Professor and Chair of Minerals Industry Engagement at The University of Queensland. Professor Chitombo, became renowned for his expertise in underground metalliferous mining, later shifting his focus to cave mining and leading numerous research partnerships, becoming a world leader in collaborative mining research.
Eligibility
You are eligible for this scholarship if you are applying to undertake a PhD full-time in the field of mass mining engineering.
How to apply
You will be considered for this scholarship when you apply for a higher degree by research program at UQ in the domestic scholarship round (Domestic applicants Round 2).
Selection criteria
Your application will be ranked on the basis of:
- Academic achievement and the potential of scholastic success; and
- Any other matters the selection committee considers to be relevant to your future research development.
Rules
This is a philanthropic HDR living scholarship and adheres to the terms and conditions outlined in the Schedule A Postgraduate Research Scholarships.
All philanthropic scholarship recipients must follow the conditions of UQ Research Scholarships terms and conditions
Holders of these philanthropic scholarships must acknowledge them in any paper that is published as a result of the research conducted while the recipient held the scholarship.
Donors may also invite the recipient to present on the work conducted as part of the scholarship, in which case they must comply or risk losing the scholarship.
It is a requirement of this scholarship, that the successful recipient is enrolled full-time to continue to remain eligible for the award.
