About this scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship is to support a Higher Degree by Research candidate in the field of medicine, law, commerce, economics or architecture. The scholarship was initially established by UQ in 1954 through the generous gift of the Honourable William Lawrence Baillieu and family.  The Baillieu family wished to support descendants of World War I veterans who had been killed, blinded or totally and permanently incapacitated during service.  The scholarship is maintained on trust pursuant to the Repatriation Fund (Baillieu Gift) Act 1937.

Eligibility

You are eligible if you are a HDR candidate studying in the field of medicine, law, commerce, economics or architecture.

Applications will be accepted from candidates who have successfully completed Progress Review 1 and intend to undertake the proposed activity/utilise the funds, prior to submitting their thesis.

This scholarship can be used to support costs relating to your research and professional development.  This may include, but is not limited to: travel, the cost of research materials (such as specialist software), workshop or training registration fees, data and/or access to databases and archives.

Applicants who provide evidence that they are a lineal descendant of an Australian soldier or sailor who died or was blinded or was totally and permanently incapacitated as a result of his service in World War I will be given preference in the selection process.

How to apply

To submit your application, apply online and attach the following completed documents:

  • CV
  • An itemised breakdown of the costs relating to your funding request.  If your funding relates to travel, please use this Budget spreadsheet
  • Principal Advisor endorsement
  • Supporting documents (such as letters of invitation, conference acceptance, workshop/training details, equipment/materials quotes etc) to support your application.
  • Evidence verifying your lineal descent from an Australian soldier or sailor who died or was blinded or was totally and permanently incapacitated as a result of his service in World War I

Applications close 11:59pm, Sunday 14 September 2025.

Tips for completing the application
  • Provide strong and clear justification for your proposed use of funds.  Well-reasoned and logical explanations would significantly contribute to your success in being awarded.
  • Make sure your writing is clear and concise. Your application will be reviewed by academic staff who may not be within your discipline as well as non-academic staff, so use language targeted at a non-specialist audience.
  • Have a defined plan, with specific dates and locations if applicable; an unclear plan will not be viewed favourably.
  • If applying for travel funding, preference will be given to applications that involve activities conducted over an extended duration (such as University / Research Institution exchange, field work and data collection, or multiple activities combined into trip) rather than those with a shorter timeframe (such as conference attendance).
  • If your application includes a conference, priority will be given to those with a confirmed presentation rather than attendance only.
  • Enclose as much supporting documentation as you can and ensure that it is as complete as possible. Applications with insufficient documentation will be disadvantaged.

Funding is highly competitive, and the number of applications invariably far outweighs available funds.

Selection criteria

Your application will be ranked on the basis of:

  • Academic achievement and experience and potential for scholastic success; and
  • Any other matters the selection committee considers to be relevant to your future research development.
